The Glencore Port Operations in Townsville operate an export facility for minerals concentrate and refined copper within the Port of Townsville precinct. The concentrate in-loading rotaside tippler has been identified as being at end of life and a feasibility study was commissioned in order to review the like-for-like replacement option for the refurbishment of the tippler, considering the increased demand on the tippler moving forward.
Orana Engineering was asked to provide electrical engineering and mechanical engineering assistance, to provide a concept design for the proposed refurbishment and upgrade, in order for feasibility level project costing to be completed by Glencore.
The mechanical engineering assistance incorporated consideration of replacing the existing fluid coupling and drum brake and worm drive gearbox in combination with an open gear reduction drive train system with a more modern VSD and disc brake system, using a helical bevel gearbox that removes the existing open gear set. The review incorporated the assessment and recommendation of various drive configurations, with appropriate consideration of safe and reliable control of the tippler drive system.
Additionally, the electrical engineering assistance comprised the upgrade of the existing MCC, replacing existing old switchgear and VSD with a modern MCC that integrates with existing equipment but provides a modern reliable platform with the ability to provide for possible future upgrade. Orana Engineering also provided structural design assistance to extend the existing switchroom building to allow for the upgrade and re-configuration of safe access into the tippler building, due to the switchroom building extension.
By working closely with our client, and other consultants engaged by our client in the project, Orana Engineering was able to contribute as part of a collective "owners engineering team" to the feasibility assessment of a significant engineering project in the Townsville Region.
